Flo Rida now a Drunk Driva

The rapper Flo Rida will be participating in the “Back on Track” program which requires him to perform community service and take DUI classes. This is because of a recent traffic stop that lead to a drunk driving arrest. The report says the rapper, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, failed a field sobriety test. It also says he blew twice the legal limit to drive into a device to measure his blood-alcohol level, had bloodshot, watery eyes, and slurred speech.

Hilton vs. Kardashian

C. Wright Mills states, “an elite cannot acquire prestige without power; it cannot retain prestige without reputation. Its past power and success builds a reputation, on which it can coat for a while.”

Two reining elite queens of celebrity are Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. The two superstars have extremely similar careers but exceedingly different reputations. Paris having been around longer than Kim has damaged her reputation via scandals.

As Mills says, you can’t have prestige without reputation.  The question is what kind of reputation generates the most power and prestige?

Movie Remakes – Good or Bad

In Hollywood remaking popular movies is a trend that has been around for decades. Some ask why fix something that was never broken? Others enjoy seeing a different viewpoint of the same story with familiar actors of their time. The movie Footloose, originally made in the 80’s, has been remade with popular dance star of our time, Julianne Hough. Is the remake better than the orginal?

Panic for Status

“The panic for status has become a professional craving; their very image of self is dependant upon publicity.”

-C Wright Mills

We have seen celebrity after celebrity gain notoriety and attention from everything they do.  Lindsay Lohan makes the news and the cover of People for doing cocaine and wrecking her car, as of last October Lohan had been to jail 15 times. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian gained significant national attention for appearances in sex tapes, and now both produce a line of beauty products for young women with their name on it.  Julianne Moore, a celebrity who does behind the scenes humanitarian work, pointed out that it seems women like Angelina Jolie and Madonna who do their work on the front lines, do it for the attention of it all.
