Not your typical business man…

“Here are the men who have the inside track. Here are all the expensive commodities, to which the rich seem appendages. Here is the money talking in its husky, silky voice of cash, power, celebrity” (C. Wright Mills).

When one thinks of men who have created empires within their industry… names like Calvin Klein and Donald Trump come to mind.  However, you don’t need to build towering skyscrapers or stitch high quality suits to become kings of industry.  If you just google the name “Jay-Z”… his success is obvious within the music industry and not only has he been quite the featured artist himself… he has made himself of the tycoons of the music industry.  Pay homage my friends.

Rocawear Vrs. Occupy Wall Street

Earlier this month the clothing company Rocawear launched by superstar Jay-Z released a new t-shirt design that addressed the Occupy Wall Street movement.

As you can tell from the picture above, instead of the shirt saying “Occupy Wall  Street” it was edited with a cross out of a red marker design and in which it now reads “Occupy All Streets”.

Soon after the t-shirts were released on the website they were taken down and disabled from purchasing. This was rumored because Rocawear was going to make a profit off the t-shirts and neglect giving any of the proceeds to the Occupy movement. Representatives have released a few statements regarding the issue:

“Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it is artistic, political or social.”

“‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”

There are a few ways you can look at this situation

1) These t-shirts were created to make good publicity towards the Occupy Wall Street movement

2) They were made to make easy money

3) Or they were made to show support from a member of the 1 %( Jay-Z) to all the other people who are the 99%

What do you think is the main goal of these t-shirts?

Jay-Z Fatherly Plans

A few months back celebrity couple Jay-Z and wife Beyonce Knowles announced that they are expecting their first child at the MTV Video Music Awards.  Since the announcement the couple has taken part in several interviews about the pregnancy and their soon to be new member or their family. Perez Hilton posted some comments from a interview with Jay-Z and fatherhood.

“Providing — that’s not love. Being there — that’s more important. I mean, we see that. We see that with all these rich socialites. They’re crying out for attention; they’re hurting for love. I’m not being judgmental — I’m just making an observation. They’re crying out for the love that maybe they didn’t get at home, and they got everything. All the material things that they need and want. So we know that’s not the key.”– Jay-Z

Jay-Z plans on being a great father when it comes to his soon to be born little girl. Even though he lives in the limelight he wants to provide his princess with the best life possible and that doesn’t mean by just providing, but with true love. He is going to take his new role in life very seriously.

This will not just be any celebrity baby, but a well rounded one!

Prestige is the Shadow of Money and Power

Def- Jam Record’s is an American record label focused on hip hop and urban music, consistantly dominating the Billboard charts with artists like Jay- Z, Rihanna, Rick Ross, and Kanye West.

This November 21st, 2011, Rihanna will be releasing her newest album TalkThatTalk with her newest song “We Found Love.” Today there was a spoiler interview released discussing the upcoming release.

Back in 2005 when Rihanna signed with Def-Jam reaching success was inevitable, the prestige of the record label guaranteed success and the necessary guidance to lead her to Money and Power. The music empire has created a Brand that is idolized by all musicians and by fan worldwide.

The ruling power and attention that this label has been able to achieve is known as Prestige: and it is often held with a mysterious force, and sense of authority.

Jay-Z Sports an Occupy Wall Street T-Shirt? Look a Little Closer

After his show at Madison Square Garden with Kanye West, it wasn’t just his performance that everyone was talking about, it was also the shirt that he was wearing. The shirt said “OCCUPY WALL STREET(S)”and is representing a movement that people such as Jay-Z and Russell Simmons are  part of.

Still don’t think Jay-Z is a Legitimate Businessman?

Jay-Z will be partaking in a new animated series called Secret Millionaires Club . His character will play a business professional promoting financial literacy for kids. This series will also feature Warren Buffet who takes on the role of an adviser to a group of “entrepreneurial kids”. To quote C. Wright Mills, “celebrities are earning sizeable income by not only working on, but virtually living on, the mass media of communication and distraction” (The Power Elite, 74).

A College Course on Jay – Z?

Jay – Z is a businessman, a hip hop artist, and now the subject of a semester long college course at Georgetown University. Michael Eric Dyson will be heading up the class and says that in the class “We look at his incredible body of work, we look at his own understanding of his work, we look at others who reflect upon him, and then we ask the students to engage in critical analysis of Jay-Z himself.” If only my school would offer such a course.

“Businessmen” of the Entertainment World

Jay – Z is more than just a hip hop artist, he is a successful businessman, he has dabbled in mens fragrences, sports teams, sports bars, and hotels.  Men’s Health did a story covering Jay-Z’s success in life and in business. The story talks about what Jay-Z has done to create his success and some of his role models when he was growing up. On pages 76 and 77 in C. Wright Mills The Power Elite, Mills discusses how in the early days of the “celebrity” the majority of these famous people were primarily entertainers and not  unlike today some of “them could be considered ‘businessmen’ of the entertaining world.”
