A Celebrities success often times can be determined by the Public Relation Agency that represents them. Throughout 2011, names that have remained in the headlines are Charlie Sheen, Kim Kardashian and Oprah Winfrey for various reasons. These household names are often time topics of dinner conversations across the US, and even internationally. These celebrities have their PR Rep’s to thank for the immediate income boost, and success. Several “PR Tactics” have allowed for the extended success.

Charlie Sheen is no rookie to Hollywood Scandal. Since the early 90’s, when Sheen accidentally shot Kelly Preston to his most recent “wining spree,” all eyes are watching and waiting for the snow ball effect to continue growing.

The series of roller coaster events have created Charlie to become known as “Hollywood’s Bad Ass.” The creation of this reputation draws audiences and a group of followers that Sheen has been able to virally market his merchandise to off of his most recent scandal.

 

Sheen’s public breakdown was made very public and allowed for audiences to tune in whether it was through his Twitter account or YouTube channel. These tactics allowed for easy access to watching Sheen’s trip to rock bottom. This may seem like a tragic downfall of one of Hollywood’s elite, but Charlie has been able to make have a net worth of $35 million dollars.

The Kardashian family initially won the hearts of viewers through their reality television show “Keeping up The Kardashian’s.” The family’s fame grew from there and slowly attention was directed to Kimberly Kardashian our homegrown American Socialite.

Kim has also done several controversial things for instance PETA criticized Kardashian for repeatedly wearing fur coats, and named her one of the five worst people or organizations in 2010 when it came to animal welfare. In addition, she has been able to receive payment of $10,000 per tweet from sponsors for each tweet. Although, I would have to say to most recent and debatable controversial event was her marriage to Kris Humphries. The marriage didn’t even last six months and appeared to be a ploy to get more viewers, as well as endorsement deals. After the “unexpected” divorce Kimberly appeared responded with a podcast explaining to fans that the divorce was just as expected to her as it was to viewers. This PR move allowed for viewers to feel connected with viewers and once again was a very smart PR tactic.

Oprah Winfrey took advantage of her intimate talk show from the mid 90’s and built up her brand turning herself into billionaire through the use of Media. This year, Oprah started her own Television Network the Oprah Winfrey Network. This was not only a brilliant PR move to gain more viewers, but this network allows for recognition of her global outreach, as well as continues to support her Billionaire status. Winfrey reaches out to audiences through social networks such as Twitter, her personal Blog, as well as her Website that keeps audiences informed. Winfrey’s PR Agency set the structure for continuous success, and a strong reputable platform that other people trust and believe in. Unlike Charlie Sheen and Kim Kardashian she is looked up to for her drive and ability to reach out to audiences and in PR that is the goal: To get audience’s attention and never lose it.

Don’t Choke on the Lime!

The word and position in society as a celebrity does not always equal power. The title of a celebrity has both many benefits and setbacks. Today, I’d like to discuss two “celebrities” that have risen to power, and then fallen in the lime light of fame.

To start off, I’d like to discuss Lindsey Lohan, as a celebrity that is consistently in the media, and being antagonized for her behavior and decisions. The public look down on Miss Lohan because of her frequent trips to rehab, party girl habits and apparent lack of self-respect for herself and her career. As a child star the lime light caused her to grow up to fast, but never allowed her to be taken seriously after she starred in “Mean Girls”.

It was all downhill from here and her chance of obtaining power was swept right under her feet, because she couldn’t handle the direct attention and her parents and agency didn’t protect her and didn’t share the same interests in preserving this young ladies future success.

Justin Timberlake turn his position of being a member of the Mickey Mouse Club and then a part of the boy band Nsync turned his 15minutes of fame into long-term fame, success, and power. At the young age of 19 years old, Mr. Timberlake won the hearts of many teeny boppers and their parents, through catchy lyrics and dance moves that were age appropriate for most viewers. Through keeping his music lyrics, and image PG-13 he was able to grow up with his fans. Many may have thought that when the boy band broke up, his career would have ended but due to his ability to be versatile and not only pursue the music industry but movies as well he has managed to stay relevant and looked up to as one of the most influential musicians in pop-culture and sought after actors in Hollywood. This position in society has allowed for him to have power over fans as well as directors and producers in the industry because throughout his career he has managed to stay professional in the lime light, so rather than choking under the pressure he can enjoy the lime!

Wes Moore Leading Youth to Success

Overcoming challenges, strife, and heartache only leads to success. advocate, Army combat veteran, business leader and author who faced more than many people would ever think is possible. Moore visited Saint John Fisher College in the Fall of 2010 sharing his story, morals and advice with students, staff, and local community members.
Moore encourages students and youth to find motivation to make their dreams come true, along with recognizing that community service is necessary, and that giving back benefits everyone around.

Next Generation: Drake

Music artist Drake, previously known as Jimmy Robins on the television series Degrassi: Next Generation took his opportunity as a youth and ran through the open door to transpire into a musical phenomenon.

Opportunity will generally excite ambition to aspire

The childhood actor was able to take advantage of the contacts made as a youth, and network with executives from the music industry and was able to gain popularity in his hometown of Toronto, into the United Sates and now internationally.

He is now set to release his second album on November 15th, 2011 Take Care, which leaked on Sunday November 6th, 2011 around 10:30pm. Many anticipated for Drake to be highly upset, but he responded via Twitter saying,

“Listen, Enjoy it, buy it if you like it… take care until next time.”

 

Reputation in the Millions

Oprah Winfrey is best known for her self-titled, multi-award- winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986-2011. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, with a net worth of over 275 million dollars, while still managing to share the wealth internationally.

An elite cannot acquire prestige without power; it cannot retain prestige without reputation

Ratings for the self-made billionaire’s flagship production, The Oprah Winfrey Show, may have diminished, but her earning power appears bulletproof—at least for now. She was able to create a partnership with Discovery Communications creating the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Prestige is the Shadow of Money and Power

Def- Jam Record’s is an American record label focused on hip hop and urban music, consistantly dominating the Billboard charts with artists like Jay- Z, Rihanna, Rick Ross, and Kanye West.

This November 21st, 2011, Rihanna will be releasing her newest album TalkThatTalk with her newest song “We Found Love.” Today there was a spoiler interview released discussing the upcoming release.

Back in 2005 when Rihanna signed with Def-Jam reaching success was inevitable, the prestige of the record label guaranteed success and the necessary guidance to lead her to Money and Power. The music empire has created a Brand that is idolized by all musicians and by fan worldwide.

The ruling power and attention that this label has been able to achieve is known as Prestige: and it is often held with a mysterious force, and sense of authority.

Duo Powerhouse in Hollywood

 

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have stirred up much controversy and attention by joining forces. Both Brad and Angelina have reached some of the highest pinnacles of success through their personal choices in movie roles and nominations and recognition. Brad Pitt has recieved two Academy Awards and was nominated  for four Golden Globe Awards, reciving one, while Jolie has recieved one Academy Award, and two Screen Actor Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards.

The movie stars and the Broadway actress….are celebrities because of what they do on and to the media

In addition to on screen success, the “Brangelina” duois greatly involved in Humanitarian work since 2003, creating the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project which is dedication to community development and enviornmental conservation in Cambodia. The recognition and attention that this duo recieves is well earned through each of their individual talents and ability to not be “stars” that are only celebrated because they occupy position of prestige.

The Kardashian brand has become a household name since Paris Hilton introduced Kim Kardashian into the socilite scene. Kim was gained her first moment of stardom due to her sex tape with R&B artist Ray J in 2007, although this may not have been her brightest moment it definetly lit the spark for stardom.

Four years later the Kardashian brand and influence has spread from Reality Television to perfume brands, and clothing lines. The success is admirable, yet my only question is, What made the Kardashian family famous? Was it Kim K’s scandle or was it Kim’s first apperance out with Paris Hilton?

Whatever they do has publicity value. More or less continuously, over a period of time, they are the material for the media of communication and entertainment.- Mills

 

Regardless of what brought stardom to the Kardashian family or any other socilite what they do matters, and ends up at the table conversation for most families at the end of the day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Take Care: “Enjoy It”

Rapper Drake’s newest album, “Take Care” has leaked nine days prior to the set release date. Once informed Drake responded to his Twitter “followers” saying:

“Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it…and take care until next time”

Now the big question that still remains is, Will fans still go out on November 15th, 2011 to purchase his album?

Fool’s Gold of Success

 The Brooklyn-based record label Fool’s Gold was founded in 2007 by DJ’s A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs and quickly established itself with a non stop series of releases bridging the worlds of hip-hop and electronic music, introducing artists like Kid Cudi while being dubbed an “Indie Innovator” by Billboard.
Kid Cudi gained his first major attention after the release of his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi. During 2009 Cudi’s hit single was able to reach the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Cudi has sold over 4.6 million digital singles, and continues to create along side artists Kanye West, and David Guetta.
