What is Public Relations? Does Anybody Know?

When I signed up to take Public Relations this semester, I really did not know what Public Relations was. I could not have defined what it was if I tried. Now that we are finishing the semester and the class is almost over, I have learned a lot about the profession and what PR professionals do, however, I still don’t think that I could come up with a definition of what PR is. Well, it makes me happy that I am not the only person that struggles with the question “What is public relations,” but I think that I have come up with a few main points to being succesful in the world of PR.

Without understanding who you are trying to communicate a message to, your message will never have its intended impact. You must understand how the public thinks, feels, and reacts to specific messages. If you can do think, coming up with PR schemes and such will be much easier and more successful.

There is not one specific correct way to become good at pubic relations. In order to be good at public relations, being able to connect with the public through many different outlet like pictures, television, movies, social media, and many more, is a key attribute.

  • Make the best out of the situation

PR professional are thrown into many different situation and told simply to make it work or to fix it. That is a pretty generic job description. However, this is expected in the business. In order to be successful, have an open mind, listen to ideas, and have a positive attitude and making the best out of any situation will be possible.

Despite learning these things in class, I don’t think I can or anyone else can give a good enough definition to public relations to give the job jusitice. However, if I had to give it my best shot I would say that public relations is the interaction, interpretation, and  communication between a source and the public.

Celebrity Power

Does celebrity always equal power? I would argue yes. In our society there are many different levels of power: social, economic, political, emotional, etc. If people know your name, know what you do, know what your involved in, or even know what scandal you were a part of, they have power in one of these areas. Celebrities are everywhere, from every walk of life, and seen through every type of media. The more they are in , the more power is possible.

We see celebrities like Charlie Sheen who has been involved in some risky business. He has been involved with porn stars, cocaine, and even got fired from his last gig. Do you think that he has power? Of course he does. Sheen may have done some terrible things but people know his name. People want to know what he is doing. Hell, people out there are probably wondering “what kind of underwear is Charlie wearing today?” Does that mean that he has power? Yes it does.

Think of it this way. If any celebrity out there, pick any one you would like, no matter how big or small, came up to you and introduced themselves. Would your heart race a little? Would you ask for their autograph? Would you be worried about saying the wrong thing? Would you walk away from the conversation hoping they liked you? Would you go home to your friends and family and tell them how awesome or even how terrible meeting this person was? Then that celebrity has done their job. They have gained their power over you. They have another person talking about them, another person spreading their name, another person spreading their brand. This is a power that most, if not all celebrities, have that most normal people do not.

Do we put too much stake into what celebrities think, feel, and do? I would say yes. But who has the power to change that? The celebrities do.

I don’t see them giving that up anytime soon.

Sheen Still Taking Shots

The days when Charlie Sheen takes shots at his old gig “Two and a half Men” may never end.

Recently Sheen posted a picture on Twitter from his new project “Charles Swan III” with a caption that read:

“this is at least TWO AND A HALF times more fun than my last gig..!”

I’ll give it to Charlie on this one. I definitely got a laugh from the caption. However, I’m sure Sheen wishes that he was still making the kind of money he was making on “Two and a half Men”.

The Tiger Woods Roller Coaster

“The professional celebrity, male and female, is the crowing result of the star system of a society that makes a fetish of competition. In America, this system is carried to the point where a man who can knock a small white ball into a series of holes in the ground with more efficiency and skill than anyone else thereby gains social access to the President of the United States.” – C. Wright Mills

Tiger Woods once gained his celebrity through his dominance of golf. He once was that man “who can knock a small white ball into a series of holes in the ground with more efficiency and skill than anyone else.” However, now that his game is struggling, one would think that he would fall out of the public eye if you were following along with this quote. But Tiger Woods is more than just that talented man. He was involved with a huge sex scandal and now people are interested to see if he can ever get himself out of this hole he has dug himself.

Not Your Ordinary Mustang

Charlie Sheen’s 1966 Ford Mustang is going to be auctioned off. The newly refurbished car is being auctioned off on charitybuzz.com.

Car lovers and regulars would love a 1966 Mustang no matter who’s it was at first. But with Sheen’s label attached to this car, you can expect bids to sky rocket just because of Sheen’s celebrity.

The proceeds coming from the sale of the car are going directly to C5 LA, a Los Angeles organization that helps at-risk youth get into college.

Sheen on Twitter

In class we are learning about the importance of using Twitter in the PR world. I guess Charlie Sheen was cued on to this fact too. After Sheen’s exodous from “Two and a half Men”, Sheen joined Twitter so fans could read his thoughts about the situation. Almost instantly he gained over 1 million followers.

Because of this popularity, Internships.com, paid Sheen to tweet a their link.

“I’m looking to hire a #winning INTERN with #TigerBlood,” he wrote in March.

Internships.com claims that almost 100,000 clicks on the link came within the first hour of the tweet.

This is great PR by both Sheen and Internships.com.

Behind The Fame

“The society lady, who held the balls and arranged the advantageous marriage for her daughter, was queen for only a relatively short period and only among a rather small public. The fashionable lady may have longed for publicity, but as a fashionable lady she did not have much of a chance to get it.”

When you watch “The Kardashians” on television, you see Kim’s mom, Kris Jenner, creating all of endorsement deals and seemingly trying to ride the coattails of her famous daughters to get some fame for herself. There have been rumors that Kim’s marriage to Kris Humphries was all a scam to get money, and if this is true, I’m sure Kim’s mother was behind the setup.

Jenner is today’s society lady, but with the fame of her children, she is queen to much larger public than the queens Mills talked about. It has yet to be determined how much longer she will be in the spotlight herself.

Sheen Back on TV

Charlie Sheen is going to be back on the tube. The highest paid actor’s proposed TV show “Anger Management” has been picked up by FX and will begin airing in the summer of 2012.

FX agreed to 10 episodes then if those episodes reach a predetermined ratings level, the network will pick up an additional 90 episodes.

The highest paid actor finally has a job again!

Do We Really Care About Brooke Mueller?

“In a cafe society, the major inhabitants of the world of the celebrity – the institutional elite, the metropolitan socialite, and the professional entertainer – mingle, publicity cashing in one another’s claims for prestige.” – C. Wright Mills

Brooke Mueller is house hunting! I’m not exactly sure why this is such a big deal but if you examine this quote by Mills, you can see why columnists are covering this. Most people wouldn’t care if Mueller was buying a pad or no but because she is Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, people seem to care a little more.

Mueller, purposely or not, is using Sheen’s publicity and gaining her own level of prestige.

Sheen Wearing His Own “Face” for Halloween

Charlie Sheen could be anything he wanted for Halloween. He deffinetly has the money. However, Charlie has an ego, a very large one, and it seems to have gotten bigger. Instead of being a witch, a vampire, or Darth Varder, Sheen has decided to be himself for Halloween. He has had a mask specially designed for him, which looks much more realistic than the other Sheen masks which have been selling like hotcakes this Halloween season.

So when you are walking around or at a party this Halloween and you see a Charlie Sheen mask, ask the person to take the mask off because it might actually be him.
